It was a day of upsets and near-upsets in the Peter Jackson VFL on Saturday, headlined by the Northern Blues’ 36-point defeat of the Box Hill Hawks and Collingwood’s 40-point victory over previous ladder leaders the Casey Scorpions.
After lacklustre starts to 2016, the Blues have now won three straight games while the Magpies are on a four-game winning run which also includes triumphs over Williamstown and Werribee.
In Saturday’s other clashes, Williamstown trailed Frankston by four points at three-quarter time but exploded in the final term to prevail by 30 points, Coburg went behind North Ballarat early in the last quarter but recovered to run away with a 30-point win and Geelong nearly pulled off a brave comeback against Footscray but ultimately fell short by seven points.
FOOTSCRAY 9.13 (67) d GEELONG 8.12 (60)
Streak: Footscray – W W W L W / Geelong – L L W L L
Telling facts: Footscray claimed its fourth win in five games following a tough slog against Geelong at Whitten Oval. The Bulldogs kicked almost half their entire score in the opening quarter to establish a 25-point lead at the first break that would prove crucial. The Cats never gave in, but kicking an inaccurate 1.7 in the final term would prove costly.
Leading goalkickers: Lynch 2, Hannan 2, Jong 2 (Footscray) / Cornell 2 (Geelong)
COBURG 14.8 (92) d NORTH BALLARAT 7.20 (62)
Streak: Coburg – L W L W W / North Ballarat – L L L L L
Telling facts: A big last quarter in which Ahmed Saad kicked three of his six goals secured Coburg’s third win of 2016 at a windy Eureka Stadium. North Ballarat hit the lead with the first goal of the final term but the Lions dominated from that point, avoiding a similar fate to Round 1 when the Roosters claimed their only victory of the season by six points in a thriller.
Leading goalkickers: Saad 6, Cauchi 2, McEvoy 2 (Coburg) / Marshall 2 (North Ballarat)
NORTHERN BLUES 15.13 (103) d BOX HILL HAWKS 10.7 (67)
Streak: Northern Blues – L L W W W / Box Hill Hawks – W L L W L
Telling facts: A big 11-goal-to-five second half saw the underdog Northern Blues topple the Hawks at Box Hill City Oval and record a third straight win. After defeating Coburg and then Frankston in their last two games, Box Hill’s scalp is clearly the Blues’ biggest of 2016. The Hawks, meanwhile, have dropped three of their last four matches.
Leading goalkickers: Silvagni 4, Jaksch 4, Buckley 2, L.Jones 2 (Northern Blues) / Willsmore 3, Webster 2, Miles 2 (Box Hill Hawks)
WILLIAMSTOWN 10.17 (77) d FRANKSTON 6.11 (47)
Streak: Williamstown – W W L W W / Frankston – L W L L L
Telling facts: It took three quarters for Williamstown to break Frankston’s resistance in difficult conditions at Burbank Oval, but when it happened, it happened quickly. The Seagulls trailed by four points and only had four goals on the board at the final change, but soon piled on five unanswered majors to help them move into top spot on the ladder.
Leading goalkickers: Masters 2, Cordy 2, Dorgan 2 (Williamstown) / Mullane 2 (Frankston)
COLLINGWOOD 8.11 (59) d CASEY SCORPIONS 2.7 (19)
Streak: Collingwood – L W W W W / Casey Scorpions – W W W W L
Telling facts: The Magpies steamrolled the ladder-leading Scorpions at Casey Fields en route to a fourth straight victory that moved them into the top four. Collingwood’s suffocating team defence snapped Casey’s five-game winning run by holding the Scorpions to their lowest score in club history (the previous lowest was 3.4 (22) in 2004).
Leading goalkickers: Cloke 2 (Collingwood) / singles (Casey Scorpions)
