NEWS: New Leopold club closer to reality after committee appointed
A NEW Leopold based football club has moved a step closer to becoming reality following the appointment of an interim committee last Friday night.
A group of enthusiasts have been working hard behind the scenes in recent months to get the idea off the ground to the extent they have come up with a working title for the club (FC Leopold) as well as a possible club logo and team colours.
Headed by newly appointed president Mitch Vials and secretary Jared Larkins, the group has met in recent months with FFV Geelong officials as well as members of the Sports and Recreation Department at the City of Greater Geelong.
Last Friday, the fledgling club held a formation meeting at the Estuary Estate sports field’s clubrooms, the magnificent new home ground for the Leopold club. The complex boasts a fully enclosed and irrigated football pitch, portable dressing rooms and full amenities, as well as an adjoining AFL pitch.
At the formation meeting, an eight member interim committee was appointed as follows:
President - Mitch Vials
Secretary - Jared Larkins
Treasurer - Luke Foster
Director of Football - Vince Aloi
Junior Coordinator - Ben Shears
General Committee members - Charlie Fitzpatrick, Sarah Marusic and Tony Aloi
According to newly appointed president Mitch Vials, FC Leopold is aiming to field teams as of next year.
“FC Leopold is currently in the planning stages and is hoping to field a senior Men’s, a senior Women’s and multiple junior teams in the Geelong Region Football competitions for the 2017 season,” Vials said.
“We are looking for enthusiastic members of the (local) community who would like to assist this sporting club in becoming a reality, whether that is as a committee member, volunteers, coaches or players,” he added.
Vials excitedly explained how one of the new club’s mission statements is to create a strong local club culture from the outset.
"We as a group are really keen to build a strong club culture and provide a place where players can develop and play for years to come".
"I'm really excited to be working on this project with my fellow committee members and look forward to giving members of the local community a place to play football," concluded the enthusiastic president of Geelong’s newest football club.
