REPORT: GRFC Men’s Division One – Round 7 Review
DEAKIN Ducks Gold have opened up a commanding three point lead at the top of the GRFC Men’s Division One standings, following the completion of Round 7 last weekend.
After a slow start to the game, leading by 1-0 at the break, the high flying Ducks totally outclassed second last placed Barwon Blue 7-0. League top scorer Harry Woolley netted a hat-trick, bringing his season’s tally to a sensational 21 goals from the opening seven matches.
Barwon’s first team, the second placed Reds, managed to hold Deakin’s second team (Deakin Ducks Green) to a 1-1 draw at Grovedale Reserve. Sean Mahon opened the scoring for the home side in the first half before Albert Antony equalised for the Greens on 74 minutes. The visitors managed to hold on for a draw and allow their Gold team to skip away to a three point lead at the top of the standings.
The surprise packets of the season so far, Breakwater Eagles, have entered the top three for the first time in years, following a 5-3 triumph in their high scoring encounter with Bell Park at the Bell Park Sports Centre on Sunday. Brandon Duthie scored a hat-trick for the Eagles, his fifth goal in two weeks.
Last season’s Grand Finalists Surfside Waves, meanwhile, have signalled their intention to return to the top of the competition following a 10-0 hammering of undermanned Elcho Park Cardinals at Elcho Park. Adrian Bond bagged four goals, while Jack Peddler scored a hat-trick for the Waves.
Following the completion of Round 7, Deakin Ducks Gold are sitting pretty on top of the league ladder with 19 points, followed by Barwon Red with 16, Breakwater Eagles, Deakin Green and Surf Coast all on 14 points and Surfside Waves on 11 making up the top six.
In Round 8 action this weekend, the majority of the top teams are faced with relatively easy assignments.
