Essendon claimed the Sir Doug Nicholls Cup on Saturday, defeating Richmond by 23 points at Punt Road Oval in the VFL Dreamtime game – Round 8’s only Peter Jackson VFL match.
Bombers ball-winner Jackson Merrett took home the Sir Doug Nicholls Award for the best player on the ground, as his team took over the contest in the last term following what was a scrappy affair until three-quarter time.
ESSENDON 9.13 (67) d RICHMOND 5.14 (44)
Streak: Essendon – L W L L W / Richmond – L L W B L
Telling facts: Essendon blew away the Tigers late to secure the Sir Doug Nicholls Cup in the VFL Dreamtime game at Punt Road Oval. Neither team capitalised fully while kicking with the wind in the opening three quarters – with Richmond only able to post an inaccurate 2.10 in the first and third stanzas – but the Bombers rode the breeze in the last term with four goals to notch its fourth win and vault into the top eight.
