The Peter Jackson VFL this week announced its leadership group for the 2016 State game against SANFL this Sunday, May 29 at Adelaide Oval, as Kate Withers reports.
Footscray captain, Jordan Russell, will lead the charge in his debut state game as the VFL guns for its first win against archrivals SANFL since 2002.
“It’s an honour, and it’s quite unexpected with a lot of VFL skippers in the side,” said Russell.
“On the day, leadership isn’t going to fall to one or two people, it’s going to fall everyone, and that’s the great thing about it.
“Spirits are high and hopefully we continue to gel well as a group and get the win.”
Russell will be supported by Box Hill captain, David Mirra, as vice captain. Mirra will play in his third consecutive state game, and is confident the VFL can reclaim bragging rights.
“I know what its like to come up against these leagues and play state footy, so I’ll be passing on my experience to the other guys,” said Mirra.
“We’ve got a really fit group and you can see the quality of players that have come through.”
As one of only six players with state game experience, Mirra expects the young VFL playing group to come out firing on Sunday.
“We’re eager to get out there, and the up and comers of the VFL will thrive on something like this.”
With a previous clash against SANFL under his belt, the state game veteran anticipates another classic tight contest this weekend.
“We’ve got to be prepared and know that it will be a game of ups and downs,” said Mirra.
On the nous and experience of his deputy in this year’s game, captain Russell says Mirra’s record speaks for itself.
“He’s a great footballer an excellent leader, he stands out at the front and he’ll be a strong leader on the day as well.”
The state squad currently sits at 24, with a final 22 plus emergency to be named Thursday night at training.
