Wynstan Stats Central Rd 7: Casey dismantles the Box

The Casey Scorpions must surely be seen as worthy ladder leaders after statistically dominating the Box Hill Hawks in their seven-point victory on Saturday night, as we look at Wynstan Stats Central for Round 7.

Box Hill was the top-ranked team in the VFL for uncontested possessions and uncontested marks before the Round 7 clash, but the stingy Scorpions kept the Hawks to 86 fewer uncontested possessions and 59 fewer uncontested marks than their previous averages.

Casey has made its living this season on being in the competition’s top two for contested possessions, hard-ball gets and clearances per game. However, it’s also attacking the opposition on the rare occasions it hasn’t won the ball in close, ranking no.1 for tackles per game.

On Saturday night, that manic pressure took away the time and space Box Hill loves to carve through defences with precision passing by foot, and duly rewarded the Scorpions with a win as well as plenty of respect.

In other key stats from Round 7:

38: Geelong’s opening quarter was the defining stanza of their win against Frankston. The Cats controlled the early play with 38 more disposals than the Dolphins to create a 40-point advantage by the first break. Frankston had only 11 fewer disposals for the remainder of the game and won the overall clearance count by 23, illustrating how important Geelong’s fast start was.

10: Port Melbourne 20-year-old Mack Rivett has certainly made an impression with his toughness since breaking into the Borough’s senior team this year. Port defeated North Ballarat by nine points last week but clearly had less of the ball than the Roosters. However, importantly, the Borough’s tackling pressure was high – and Rivett led the way with an equal-game-high 10 of them.
