Congratulations to the Southern Football who were too good for the EDFL at senior level in the Worksafe Interleague Championships at Lyndhurst Football ground. The hosts won 14.9.93 to 6.8.44.
The SFL jumped the EDFL in the first quarter with the opening three goals of the game and it put the visitors on the back foot and set the scene for the remainder of the game. Cora Lynn forward Ryan Gillis kicked the EDFL’s only goal in the term and former Longwarry and now Dusties midfielder Tye Holland was outstanding in and around the centre with his attack on the ball. Trailing by 18 points at quarter time the EDFL camp were very confident it could get back into the game in the second quarter as it was to kick with the aid of a two to three goal wind but struggled to manufacture many meaningful forward thrusts.
In the third quarter the SFL added five goals to one to take a stranglehold on the game. Despite what the scoreboard suggested the EDFL controlled a fair bit of the play but bungled a few kicks on goal and in general play and were made to pay when the locals rebounded coast to coast twice late in the quarter to open up a match winning 42 point lead at three quarter time.
In the last quarter the SFL kicked the first two goals of the quarter to put the result beyond question.
The EDFL won plenty of midfield ball but often broke down across the half forward line. Holland was sensational, Shane Brewster and Mitch Nobelius consistent all four quarters. Nathan Gillis, who was awarded the VCFL medal for the EDFL best player and Chris Urie stood out in the second half. Behind centre Nathan Muratore was very good and along with Calum Shiels both made their presence felt. To wrap up the EDFL tried hard but lacked leg speed all over the field and was guilty of too many turnovers when kicking the ball into its forward line.
The SFL won because it used the ball more constructively. Its defence played the percentages well and the ability of their back six to hit targets out of defence was phenomenal. Midfielders Tony Lavars, Andrew Jansen and Nathan Robinson did the damage early while defenders Andrew Frost and Brody Hodic prove hard to pass.
EDFL Best: Tye Holland, Nathan Muratore, Mitch Nobelius. Shane Brewster, Cal Shiels & Nathan Gillis.
Goalkickers: Ryan Gillis, Tye Holland, Mitch Nobelius, Shane Brewster, Cal Shiels and Anthony Giuliano.
