Round three seen the top four sides take on the bottom four sides with the results going accordingly, Donald defeated Wedderburn by over ten goals, Charlton accounted for new side Sea Lake Nandaly and Wycheproof-Narraport for the second week in a row kicked twenty goals in defeating the Birchip-Watchem Bulls comfortably. In the other game the Boort Magpies again came up trumps this time St Arnaud being the casualty. Boort who went through last year without a win have now won two of their three matches and will gain more wins as the season progresses. For the reigning premiers St Arnaud they have lost all three games this season and they may have to revisit the drawing board to get themselves back on track but with Nick Coghlan on report that task may be a little harder in the coming weeks.
Wedderburn v Donald
Donald got the points in their contest against Wedderburn getting home by over ten goals but the scores did not give a true indication of the standard of the game. Wedderburn drew first blood when Ben De Araugo got the Redbacks away to a good start and it took the Royal Blues till late in the quarter to post their first goal when Haddow split the big sticks. Rob Tonkin responded for the home side and the Redbacks were looking good. Neville cut back the margin with a nice goal and soon after Seamus Young put the Donald side in front and on siren time Gash put the Redbacks within a kick to the ladder leaders.
In the second term Donald was able to establish a good margin between themselves and Wedderburn to lead by five goals at half time. Donald was sending the ball forward and with Neville and Seamus Young in good form they were getting good returns for their efforts. Wedderburn on the other hand had a fair share of the play but found it hard to convert with Garner turning the ball back on many occasions. In this term both Neville and Young kicked two goals and for the Redbacks Adam Postle kicked their only two goals for the quarter. Donald had picked up their game after the first break and their delivery of the ball and backing up was giving them the edge over a gallant Wedderburn side who’s younger players were adjusting to the pace and making solid contributions for the Redbacks, but the half time margin between them and the Royals was concern with a half to go and the Redbacks didn’t want to see Donald run away to a big win.
In the third term the Redbacks matched motors with the Royals with both sides adding three goals but Donald had more opportunities to add to their lead but missed the target to register only minor scores. Wedderburn kicked the first two goals in this quarter with Postle and Benaim scoring for the home side to cut back the Donald lead. Beckham and Hogan responded for Donald to give them a thirty four point lead at the last change. Garner, Fisher and Ross Young were better players to this point for Donald and the Redbacks were gaining value out of Ben De Araugo, Polglase and Tonkin.
In the final term Donald slammed on seven goals to stamp their authority on the game and see them run out winners by over ten goals. Seamus Young was a solid contributor up forward finishing the game with six goals and he was closely followed by Jonathon Neville with five goals. For the Redbacks Danny Benaim finished with four goals and Adam Postle with three. The scores did not give a true indication of the standard of the game it was just that the Royals were able convert their work better than the Redbacks who looked good in patches but needed to make better with their limited opportunities. Garner, Neville, Seamus and Ross Young. Luke Fisher and Ryan Leeder were named best players for Donald and the Redbacks best was Ben DeAraugo, Danny Benaim, Rob Tonkin, Haydon Polglase, Joe Lockhart and Jacob Hernan. Danny Benaim kick four goals for the Redbacks and Adam Postle finished with three.
Final scores Donald 20-13=133 defeated Wedderburn 10-8=68.
St Arnaud v Boort
Boort coming off their first win for the year went into this game full of confidence and the Saints were looking to get their season off to a better start than their first two outings. In an even first quarter both sides kicked two goals each but it was Boort who went to the quarter time break four points clear.
In the second quarter Boort took control of the game to kick clear of the reigning premiers. Boort’s slick use of the ball appeared to stun the Saints and they could not match it with the Magpies.
Orr was again giving Boort first use of the ball and Jarrod Fitzpatrick was taking full advantage of Orr’s good work. Up forward Aaron Wilson was again solid and giving the Magpies a focal point to aim for. At half time Boort had kicked out to a thirty point lead and the Saints who were missing some key players were having trouble containing Boort’s running game.
St Arnaud made a mini comeback in the early part of the third term but this only spurred the Boort side on as they struck back to extend their lead by the end of the quarter. The Saints suffered some injuries in this term that did not help their cause but there was no sympathy coming from the Magpies camp as they had been on the receiving end a fair bit in recent times.
In the final quarter both sides managed to kick two goals as Boort marched to a forty three point win to record their second win. The Saints will now have to regroup for their next encounter which they will need to be right on their game as they take on the ladder leaders in Donald. Boort on the other hand will be looking forward to their next game against the Bulls. Boort was best served by Keiran Wilson, Jarrod Fitzpatrick and Harry Weaver; best for the Saints were Bloomer, Discher and Summers.
Final score Boort 14-19=103 defeated St Arnaud 9-6=60
Birchip-Watchem v Wycheproof-Narraport
The Wycheproof-Demons got away to a flyer in their game against the Bulls kicking seven goals in the opening term while the Bulls could only register minor scores.
In the second term the Bulls made a comeback and were able to pull back the Demons lead to trail by nineteen points at half time. Ricky Allan was in hot form gaining many possessions and making many conversions with support coming from Corey Jones. Ratcliffe was the Bulls best to half time.
The Demons put the foot flat to the floor in the premiership term to post a further eight goals and again hold the Bulls to only minor scores. The Demons went to three quarter time with a lead of over ten goals and looked certain to retain their winning form.
In the final quarter the Bulls did play their best football for the day as they set about reducing the Demons lead. They were successful in this term but the three quarter time lead held by the Demons was too great and at the final siren the Demons had got home by 51 points. Ricky Allan with seven goals was best for the Demons and had good support from Howgate, Riordan and George Turner. The Best for the Bulls was Sirett who continues to impress, Ratcliffe and Walsh.
Final scores
Wycheproof-Narraport 20-5 defeated Birchip-Watchem 10-14=74
Charlton v Sea Lake Nandaly Tigers
Charlton were always in charge of their game against the Tigers and led from start to finish. Sea Lakes best quarter was their last when they kicked five goals but the damage had been done by the Navies in the early quarters. Charlton’s Joe McGrath finished the day with eight goals. Luke Kyriakides was named best for the Navies with Sam O’Connor, Tim Nicholson and Zane Sullivan featuring in the awards.
For Sea Lake Nandaly Matt Elliott was again named their best player with McInnes, Weekly and Durie rating mentions.
Charlton won the game by thirty three points to remain undefeated and the will meet another undefeated side in Wycheproof-NARRAPORT next week and the Tigers will be out to record their first win when they take on the Redbacks from Wedderburn.
