Gold Coast City Women coach Dave Thompson says his side isn’t getting carried away with their top four position ahead of this week’s clash against Souths United Women.

City are currently fourth in the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues Women’s standings on the back of a seven match undefeated run and know a win against Souths this weekend could lift them as high as second.

With the squad comprised primarily of players from last year’s youth team, the run of results has surprised some but Thomson’s focus remains squarely on week to week improvement.

I don't get caught-up in where we sit on the ladder. Fourth sounds good, but I try not to get distracted by it,” Thompson explained.

We’re not even half way through the season yet, so the next game is what we need to work on.”

We’ll approach the week pretty much the same as any other. This is a development year for us as a group.”

“The girls are in this competition to test themselves against very good players, this weekend we get the chance to do just that.”

City will be confronted by a raft of familiar faces when they travel to Souths – a team that lured a large number of players from last year’s Grand Final runners up Palm Beach SC, as well as coach Gary French.

Thompson said he will not change his approach to the fixture, which is being touted in some quarters as a grudge match.

I know the girls are looking forward to the game as they know a lot of the Souths team.”

Gary will have his players ready I'm sure of that, and we will be too,” he concluded.
