Bayswater claim Italian derby spoils
Report by Tommy Doleman
Bayswater City maintained their charge towards the top of the PS4 National Premier Leagues WA with a 2-1 win over old rivals Perth Soccer Club at Finance 365 Stadium.
Jason Mirco proved to be the match winner with a brace as the defending champions showed that they wouldn’t be giving up their crown without a fight.
Perth, who suffered only their second loss of the season, had their chances to get something out of the match but Dean Evans’ strike ultimately came too late to make an impact on proceedings.
Both teams had their moments in a first half where blustery conditions affected the quality in the final third.
Francis Soale denied David Heagney after 15 minutes before Gustavo Catarcione fired inches wide five minutes before the break for Perth.
Two minutes after half time the home side made the breakthrough when Perth struggled to deal with a corner and Mirco was on hand to stab home.
Perth responded well and came close twice through as Devon Spence foiled Reece Vittiglia before stopping Catarcione’s header.
But the visitors rued those missed chances as Mirco curled a free kick over the wall to double Bayswater’s leader just past the hour mark.
Soale produced a good block soon after to deny Mirco his hat trick, while at the other end Vittiglia couldn’t trouble Spence with a free header.
Evans did eventually register a consolation for Perth with a cracker from outside the area but referee Nico Hoyle blew the whistle for full time immediately after the restart.
