Subiaco clinch first point of season

Report by Jayden Lihou

A goal from Angel Andres denied Subiaco all three points as Cockburn were held to a 1-1 draw at Dalmatinac Park on Saturday.

The draw ensured Subiaco claimed their first point of the season after starting their campaign with seven straight defeats.

Subiaco manager Mick Brazil thought his side could have won the match but admits  admitted  a lack of leadership and fitness had cost the team.

“I would have been happy if we had gotten all three points but just a lack of discipline and inexperience cost us in the end,” he said.

“In the last three or four weeks we have been gradually getting closer to where we want to be and the result today was another progress for us.

“I thought the whole team did very well; five or six weeks ago we would have probably came off losers but today the team had a desire to hang in there and see the game out, but there is still plenty to work on.”

Subiaco opened the scoring in a first half where goal scoring chances were few and far between.

The referee awarded a penalty when Rory Feely was felled inside the box in 9th minute.

Feely stepped up to take the penalty and had it saved by Luke Radonich but the ball was parried back into the path of Feely who slotted it home giving his side the lead.

Cockburn had the first real chance of the second period when Cameron Edwards received the ball just outside the goal area.

But his low-hard shot was saved by an outstretched Ryan Montgomery.

Cockburn went level in the 71st minute when captain Harry O’Brien cut the ball across for Andres who made no mistake.

Subiaco were unlucky not to have scored in the 82nd minute when Ian McMurray had his headed effort thunder against the crossbar.

Cockburn’s Aden Da Luz had a chance to win all three points for his side deep into injury time.

Da Luz found space inside the box after a quick one-two but his low driven shot was just wide of creeping in off a post.

Cockburn coach Scott Miller admitted that he wasn’t pleased with what he saw.

“It was a horrible game to be honest, we were not at the races today,” he said.

“We had the worst thing happen to us when we gave them an early goal and then they just sat back and defended.

“I think we were good until we got into the final area, but they defended with ten players so we had to deliver a good ball.

“But unfortunately our crossing, final pass and finishing wasn’t where we wanted it to be but at least we got away without a loss.”
