On Thursday 7th April Arnold left Brisbane with his 13yr old son and approximately 60 motorcycle riders as part of a national event called The Long Ride™. The purpose of this ride is to raise awareness for men’s health issues and much needed funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA). These funds are dedicated towards the continued research into a cure for Prostate Cancer and providing the funding for specialist nurses in our hospitals.
The Long Ride™ is held approximately every 18 months with a different destination each event. This year the destination was Margaret River WA. Past events have been to Uluru, Cairns, Sydney, Darwin, Perth and Darwin. Generally riders are on the road for approximately 7 days to reach the official destination point before making their way home.
This year's event took the riders through rural Australia from all States and Territories and across the Nullarbor. They travelled past iconic towns and places most of us read about in school. The Brisbane riders stayed at Moree, Nyngan, Broken Hill, Port Augusta, Ceduna, Border Village, Norseman, Esperance, Albany and finally Margaret River.
By the time riders left Esperance WA there was approximately 458 participants on over 400 motorcycles and the ride into Margaret River on Saturday 16th April was an occasion that not only the riders will remember but also those that were in the township as the riders converged on the Quality Inn Margaret River.
Arnold was one of a handful of participants that decided he didn’t want to return home the same way and considering he was already in lower WA, why not travel home up the WA coastline, across into NT and back down via outback and central QLD. All up he was on the road for 25 days and covered 12,784kms and used roughly 775 litres of fuel. (All costs incurred during his adventure were covered directly from his own pocket and no fund raising monies were used)
Given that this is a charity ride and is dedicated to the promotion of Men’s Health issues and Prostate Cancer research, the MAFQ has decided to donate $400 to PCFA and Steve Burchill, the MAFQ President, encourages all Masters players to also get behind this worthy cause.
