The key word for Sunday’s four Peter Jackson VFL matches was clearly ‘wind’. Melbourne’s wild conditions made it difficult to play consistent four-quarter football, but Williamstown, the Casey Scorpions, Geelong and the Box Hill Hawks weathered the storm to claim victories.
Williamstown outlasted Port Melbourne in a slogging spectacle to win by seven points, Casey held on in the last quarter to defeat Essendon by 17 points, Geelong set up a 35-point victory early against Coburg and Box Hill pulled away from Frankston in a strong second half to prevail by 59 points.
WILLIAMSTOWN 8.4 (52) d PORT MELBOURNE 5.15 (45)
Streak: Williamstown – W L W W / Port Melbourne – L W W L
Telling facts: Wild conditions at Burbank Oval made the clash between these famous old rivals a dour struggle. Williamstown’s accurate kicking belied the howling winds and made Port Melbourne’s third-term wastefulness a key factor in the result. The Borough had the momentum at the final change, but the Seagulls used their experience and polish to overcome a nine-point three-quarter-time deficit.
Leading goalkickers: Dunell 2, Dorgan 2 (Williamstown) / Mihocek 2 (Port Melbourne)
CASEY SCORPIONS 10.11 (71) d ESSENDON 7.12 (54)
Streak: Casey Scorpions – W W L W / Essendon – L W W L
Telling facts: Both teams struggled to score against a strong breeze at Windy Hill, with Casey’s ability to restrict Essendon to four goals while kicking with the wind crucial to the result. The Scorpions had their lead cut from 30 points at the final change but held on to record their third victory of 2016 and inflict the Bombers’ second defeat.
Leading goalkickers: Wilson 2, Newton 2 (Casey Scorpions) / J.Langford 2 (Essendon)
GEELONG 15.12 (102) d COBURG 10.7 (67)
Streak: Geelong – B L W W / Coburg – L L L L
Telling facts: A quick start secured the break Geelong held for most of the match to defeat a competitive Coburg outfit at Simonds Stadium. The Cats booted five goals to two in the opening term to lead by 20 points at quarter time and kept their lead at around five goals after that. The win was the club’s second of the season, while the Lions remain winless.
Leading goalkickers: Cornell 3, Dobson 2, Murdoch 2 (Geelong) / Younan 3, Saad 2 (Coburg)
BOX HILL HAWKS 14.14 (98) d FRANKSTON 5.9 (39)
Streak: Box Hill Hawks – W W W W / Frankston – L L W L
Telling facts: Box Hill made sure the emotion surrounding Frankston’s first win in 24 games last week didn’t continue at Box Hill City Oval. After a competitive first half from the Dolphins in which they trailed by just 19 points at the main break, the Hawks put the foot down by kicking eight goals to two after half time and ensuring they remain undefeated on top of the ladder.
