Bayswater had Todd Howarth to thank for two long-range efforts that guided his side past a resilient Subiaco at Rosalie Park on Saturday.

Despite being in control of the game for most of the match, Bayswater struggled to create many clear-cut chances thanks to a deep and resilient defence from Subiaco.

A long-range effort in the 25th minute by Todd Howarth opened the scoring, the midfielder curling a shot from 25m past goalkeeper Ryan Montgomery and into the bottom left corner.

Howarth struck again for his second of the game in similar fashion in the 72nd minute, this time striking from outside the box into the bottom right corner, leaving Montgomery with no chance despite his best efforts.

Bayswater coach Chris Coyne said that whilst his team made the win look comfortable, he heaped praise on a Subiaco side that now find themselves with zero points from seven games.

“We’ve had a hard day at the office today and you’ve got to give them credit for the effort they put in,” he said.

“We could have potentially had a couple more but credit to them I think they really dug in and for 90 minutes they worked their socks off for their manager.”

Even with their lack of presence on Bayswater’s half Subiaco had several good opportunities and should have scored near the end of the first half.

Subiaco captain Nathan Diaz’s shot was parried by Bayswater goalkeeper Devon Spence into the path of Rory Feely who from inside the box, hit a weak effort that was saved again by Spence in a fine double save.

There were also shouts for a Subiaco penalty which was turned down in the 60th minute, when it seemed a maroon shirt was pulled down from behind while waiting to receive the ball.

Subiaco coach Mick Brazil said that it was a penalty in his mind but again spoke of the admirable performance from his team.

“Every week we’re making progress as silly as it sounds at the bottom of the table but we’re not far away now,” he said.

“We’ve just got to stop these silly mistakes”.

Subiaco remain bottom on ladder, while Bayswater jump ahead of Sorrento into fourth place.
