The story of Saturday’s Round 3 Peter Jackson VFL action was the mighty performance of Frankston, which fought back from a big early deficit to beat Richmond by 13 points and break a run of 24 consecutive losses.
The day’s other winners were the Box Hill Hawks, who broke Coburg hearts by snatching an eight-point victory at the death, Port Melbourne over the Northern Blues by 19 points, Sandringham over Footscray by 28 points and Williamstown over the Casey Scorpions by 44 points.
On Friday night, Geelong accounted for North Ballarat to the tune of 74 points.

The Hawks trailed by eight points deep into the last quarter but used their strength and experience to conjure the final three goals of the game and keep an undefeated start to 2016 going.

After a slow start to the match, Port Melbourne slammed on six goals to Northern’s solitary behind in the second stanza, opening up 34-point half-time advantage that the Blues couldn’t overcome.

The first half was a see-sawing affair that saw several lead changes, but Sandringham made the decisive move with an eight-goal-to-four third quarter to set up victory.

Telling facts: Fans were treated to a goal-for-goal contest early on under lights at Casey Fields before Williamstown put the foot down, five second-quarter goals to two setting up a 26-point half-time advantage that Casey couldn’t overcome. It meant the Scorpions dropped their first match for 2016 while the Seagulls rebounded from a loss to the Box Hill Hawks.
