REPORT: GRFC Men’s Masters’ Division – Round 2 review

By: Ben SHEARS

FOLLOWING last weekend’s games in Round 2 of the Men’s Masters’ Division, the Over 35s age competition had two close matches being contested between Barwon and Barwon Heads as well as Bell Park and Elcho Park Cardinals.

Kicking off the weekend on the Friday night, Barwon SC hosted Barwon Heads at Grovedale Reserve to win in a close 1-0 result. Oliver Raetz scored for the home team to earn their second win for the season. The Barwon squad currently sits 3rd on the ladder following this victory.

At the Bell Park Sports Centre in Batesford, Bell Park hosted Elcho Park Cardinals and ran out 4-2 winners. The numerically superior Bell Park side displayed their dominance victory courtesy of Peter Bruno’s brace and Gene Giandomenic’s and Peter Van Den Berg’s singles, whilst on the other side of the pitch Jozo Boras and Mijo Trupkovic both scored singles for the visiting team. The Cardinals made a good start to their Masters season playing their first round extremely well, despite only having 11 fit players in the second half.

The final Masters game meant to be played last weekend was Lara United v Drysdale. Unfortunately the Lara side forfeited the match to give Drysdale to default win to put them 2nd on the ladder.

The Drysdale Masters decided to hold a friendly interclub 5-aside to keep their fitness up and not take the day off.

Corio SC had a bye and sit 4th on the ladder.

The pick of the matches for this weekend’s Round 3 will be the Bell Park v Corio clash at Hume Reserve on Sunday at 3pm. The fiercely competitive Bell Park side currently sits 1st on the ladder while Corio trails behind in 4th spot.

Lara United were supposed to take on Barwon Heads game. Originally set down for Lara’s Recreation Reserve for Sunday, the game was shifted to Friday night at Barwon Heads but has been cancelled following the withdrawal of Lara United from the Men’s Masters on Thursday morning, due to a lack of numbers.
