AUSTRALIAN RULES: Toowoomba Tigers open the AFL Darling Downs men's season with their first win in more than a year.
Tigers recorded a dominant 29.10 (192) to 0.3 (3) win over Lockyer Valley at Rockville Park on Saturday in round one to get off to a flying start to the season.
It was the first win since 2014 for Tigers and came after Michael O'Donoghue and Trent Ballin each kicked six goals.
There was a much closer result at USQ as South Toowoomba downed University by one point.
Souths got off to a good start to lead by 17 points at quarter time.
University responded in the second quarter and led by one point at the second and third changes before the Bombers closed out a 10.8 (68) to 10.7 (67) win.
New recruit Bradley Pontt kicked six goals for Souths in the victory.
Coolaroo also got its title defence off to a winning start with a 104-point triumph over Dalby.
Coolaroo kicked 21 goals in the win, with coach Ben Adams thinking the game was expectedly scrappy given it was round one.
Meanwhile, Goondiwindi posted a 45-point win over Warwick on the road.
