Two late strikes gave Balcatta their first win of the season as they recorded a 2-0 victory against Subiaco at Rosalie Park.

It was an end-to-end contest that looked to be ending goalless until the 88th minute, when substitute Parvis Shirzardi volleyed home from a through ball into the bottom right corner.

Subiaco then pushed for an equaliser and were undone at the back as Anthony Barabusha capitalised and slotted home in injury time to seal Balcatta’s first three points.

The result is harsh on Subiaco who, despite having less of the possession, defended vigilantly for the majority of the game and looked dangerous when going forward.

An attempt by Rory Feely in the 50th minute narrowly went wide, while a header by Jackson Dongray in the 59th minute was cleared off the line.

At the other end goalkeeper Ryan Montgomery pulled off a couple of fine saves to keep the score at 0-0.

Subiaco coach Mick Brazil said that he would have been happy with a point from the game, but praised his team’s performance.

“We worked really hard but to lose goals like that at the end is criminal,” he said.

“At the end of the day football is about goals.”

Balcatta coach Marc Anthony was glad to finally get their first win of the season and praised the endurance of his players to keep going until the final whistle.

“The longer it went, you thought it was going to stay at 0-0 but that result was down to pure perseverance, we kept going and going and got the goals in the end,” he said.

Substitute Parvis Shirzardi scored the first goal and Anthony said even before the game he knew substitutes would be vital.

“We knew the longer the game went on they would tire because it’s very difficult to try and defend for that amount of time so we knew the substitutes would have an impact,” Anthony said.

The result lifts Balcatta above Perth Glory and Cockburn into ninth, while Subiaco remain bottom, still without a point this season.

Balcatta host Perth SC in a tough game at Grindleford Reserve next week, whilst Subiaco face Perth Glory at Ashfield Arena.
