Luke Smith has used a setback as a junior to inspire him to bigger and better things in the past three years of his football career.
As a 15-year-old he missed the cut for the schoolboys’ team, but rather than let that get him down he used it as motivation to win a spot in the Murray Bushrangers 12 months later.
But after a good year with the under 16s he was again struck down by a stroke of bad luck in his first year of his debut TAC Cup season.
He ended up playing the last five games of that year due to illness.
Smith backed up by playing nearly every game last year and he has since moved into the Goulburn Valley League where he made a stunning debut for the Bears last week.
His three goals helped his new club win their first match against its fiercest rival in seven seasons.
That performance against the Demons helped earn the first nomination for this year’s Rising Star Award.
He openly admits that his second game was not as good, with his Bears also losing the four points to Echuca.
His aim is very simple:
I just want to play consistent football every week and hopefully help the team win as many games as possible this year.
Smith started playing his football with Guthrie Street and he is a product of the Congupna Football Club where he played fourths and thirds before moving onto the Murray Bushrangers.
