GRFC WOMEN'S DIV 1: Round 1 Devastating Deakin shoots to the top after opener

By: Ben SHEARS

FOLLOWING an interesting start to the new look GRFC Women’s Division One competition, Deakin Ducks and Surfside Waves came away with maximum points to be on top of the ladder, while Drysdale and Barwon picked up a point apiece.

This year’s competition has seen the top tiered competition take on an elite profile, with just six crack sides fighting out the title of the best club in the region. The nine team Division Two league is more of a developmental competition with most clubs expected to field very youthful squads or mature players who have never played the game before.

Title contenders Deakin Ducks hosted Geelong SC on the new multi-million dollar synthetic pitch at Deakin University Top Fields and overran their opposition with a classy 6-0 victory. Andrea Thornton scored an incredible four goals, followed by singles apiece to Kelsey Icardi and Mollie Cooper.

Across town at Kardinia College in Bell Post Hill, Surfside Waves played a tough match against the Kardinia College but came out on top courtesy of a 3-1 win. Surfside scored an early goal in the opening minutes but it was brought back to a 1-1 scoreline after Annie Liddy-Corlet scored in the 10th minute for the reigning champions. The teams went into half time with the score at 1-2, after Faye Kendall netted her second for the Waves. The result was put beyond doubt when Cath Sattler scored deep into the second half.

The final game of the opening round saw Drysdale SC and Barwon SC square off against each other at Howard Glover Reserve. The hosts did well to contain the reigning Grand Final winners, eventually ending the game with the scores locked at 1-1. The two goalscorers for Barwon were Michaela Buchanan, while Olivia Smith scored for Drysdale.

After the game, Drysdale coach Craig Riley said he was extremely happy with his midfield and especially Serena Clapp and Sophie Nelson.

The pick of the action in Round 2 this weekend, will be the top of the ladder clash between Surfside Waves and Deakin Ducks. This game will be played on Friday night at the Shell Road complex in Ocean Grove. Kick-off is at 7.30pm.

On Saturday, Geelong SC will host Drysdale SC at Stead Park at 3pm, while Barwon will take on Kardinia College at Grovedale Reserve in the earlier game at 1pm.
