Supporters of Collingwood and Richmond’s AFL teams can take solace in the performances of their Peter Jackson VFL squads this weekend, with the Magpies defeating Port Melbourne and the Tigers taking it up to reigning premier Williamstown in defeat.
The AFL Magpies and Tigers both suffered inglorious losses on Saturday, but Sunday’s Round 1 VFL results demonstrated both clubs have depth on their lists.
In the day’s other match, Footscray started the 2016 season with a big win over the Northern Blues.
FOOTSCRAY 15.14 (104) def NORTHERN BLUES 8.7 (55)
Streak: Footscray – W / Northern Blues – L
Telling facts: The Bulldogs bounded from the blocks as their AFL counterparts are known to do with five first-term goals to Northern’s two, and they didn’t let up from there. A home crowd at VU Whitten Oval saw Footscray extend its lead to 30 points early in the third quarter, weather a brief Blues fightback and go on to keep the opposition goalless in the final stanza.
Leading goalkickers: Jamieson 2, Minson 2, Honeychurch 2, Adcock 2, Dale 2, J.Wallis 2 (Footscray) / Jones 3, Gallucci 2 (Northern Blues)
COLLINGWOOD 14.13 (97) def PORT MELBOURNE 10.13 (73)
Streak: Collingwood – W / Port Melbourne – L
Telling facts: The Magpies made the Borough look sluggish at North Port Oval, opening up a 22-point half-time advantage following an even first quarter. Port dug deep after the long break though, hitting the lead approaching time-on in the third stanza. However, Collingwood’s superior skills and relentless pressure told in the end, a five-goal-to-one final term sealing the victory.
Leading goalkickers: Ferguson 2, Crocker 2, J.Smith 2, Wyatt 2, Macaffer 2 (Collingwood) / Sandilands 3, Lisle 3 (Port Melbourne)
WILLIAMSTOWN 16.13 (109) def RICHMOND 9.10 (64)
Streak: Williamstown – W / Richmond – L
Telling facts: Williamstown may have made it look easy on the scoreboard but Richmond didn’t let the Seagulls have things all their own way at Burbank Oval. The Tigers held a three-point lead at half time following a very competitive early effort but the reigning premier’s class won out in the end with a 10-goal-to-two second half.
Leading goalkickers: Anastasio 4, Cordy 3, Wheeler 2 (Williamstown) / McBean 2, Castagna 2, Couch 2 (Richmond)
