Winners in the opening day of the 2016 Peter Jackson VFL season were Werribee, Box Hill Hawks, North Ballarat and Casey Scorpions.
North Ballarat claimed its first win as a standalone, Box Hill Hawks led all day against Sandringham, Werribee fought back from a five goal deficit to claim victory against Essendon and Casey enjoyed a goal avalanche against Frankston.

Telling facts: With 10 debutants for the Roosters, Shaun Lyle led the way with four goes for the visitors, but it was a late goal to ruckman Rowan Marshall that sealed the first win for North Ballarat and new coach Marc Greig.

Telling facts: Box Hill Hawks proved practice match form means nothing when the season begins, reversing a 147-point defeat to Sandringham a fortnight ago to claim a 37-point win. The Hawks led from start to finish, kicking the first three goals to jumper to an early 21-point lead with likes of Sam Iles and Brendon Whitecross having plenty of the ball.

Werribee 16.6 (102) d Essendon 12.12 (84)
Streak: Werribee - W / Essendon - L
Telling facts: Werribee recovered from a 31-point deficit halfway through the second term, to run out winners by 18 points against Essendon. The Tigers dominated the second half, kicking 10 goals to two to wrestle control of the game their way, with Mason Wood kicking 3 goals to go with his 36 disposals.

Casey Scorpions 27.17 (179) d Frankston 5.5 (35)
Streak: Casey - W / Frankston - L
Telling facts: The Scorpions kicked 24 goals to four after the first break to kick its biggest score against the Dolphins. Despite the first quarter loss of both Jack Trengove (concussion) and Mitchell King (possible knee), the home team had all the answers underlights, with the likes of Christian Petracca, Sam Weideman and Cam Pedersen among the best.
