THE Southern Football League has a new general manager in AFL Victoria club development manager Wayne Holdsworth.
Holdsworth's appointment was confirmed last Wednesday as part of a new SFL management structure adopted following the departure of CEO Phil Stevens. SFL vice-president Garry Cranny has been appointed interim CEO, the position is being "road-tested'' as a part-time role.
Holdsworth and business manager Kingsley Ellis will report to Cranny, and they will be assisted by administration officer Maree Heverin. "We think the structure we've implemented is the best way forward for our organisation. What we're seeing is that the focus of the CEO gets diluted in the day-to-day running of the competition,'' Cranny said last Wednesday.
"The two biggest single issues for us are junior development the long-term lifeblood of the competition and having better-managed clubs. "We need to have someone who can spend virtually all their time dealing with those two issues. That's why we've appointed a general manager.''
He said Holdsworth, a former president of Ormond Amateur Football Club, was passionate about junior football and would work towards establishing an under-18 competition in concert with the Moorabbin Saints Junior Football League.
Cranny said the CEO would provide the "strategic direction and focus'' of the league. He said he would fill the position in the short to medium term and help identify his successor.
Ellis will have responsibility for all financial aspects of the SFL, as well as a sponsorship and special projects, including relocation to new offices once the Moorabbin redevelopment starts at the end of the year.
