Geelong’s VFL team will have a distinct ‘Selwood’ feel on Friday night.
Joel Selwood will play for the VFL Cats for the first time since his debut AFL season in 2007 in a practice match against Richmond’s VFL team at Punt Road Oval.
Joel’s brother Troy is the General Manager of Geelong’s VFL program and would probably have never thought he’d be welcoming his triple-premiership-winning sibling into his team’s fold.
One of the toughest, most decorated and respected players in the AFL, Joel has struggled with the debilitating foot condition plantar fasciitis over the pre-season and is in a race against time to be fit for Geelong’s opening-round clash with Hawthorn on Easter Monday. It is hoped Selwood will gain crucial match fitness in the VFL practice match alongside players who have likely idolised him from afar for years.
Adding to the family feel around Simonds Stadium, Scott Selwood joined his brothers at Geelong after crossing from West Coast as a free agent last year.
Scott has injury worries of his own, with ongoing ankle problems threatening to sideline him for the early part of the AFL season. There’s every chance that when he returns, older brother Troy will be overseeing his progress back to health in the VFL team too.
After departing the Brisbane Lions at the end of the 2010 season, Troy played 48 games with the VFL Cats from 2011-13 and captained the club in 2012 and 2013.
The Richmond vs Geelong VFL practice match kicks off at 6.30pm.
