SWQ Thunder Women notched their first win of the season after comfortably accounting for Peninsula Power Women 5-1 at Clive Berghofer Stadium.
The hosts were rarely troubled in their first home match of the campaign – taking the lead only five minutes into the contest and holding it until the close.
Hopes of a Power comeback were scuttled by a telling injury toll – with Abby Belford and Victoria Brebner succumbing to previous knocks in the first half and Michelle Le Roux and Grace Deroux also forced from the contest in the second stanza.
Thunder’s win was achieved without head coach Keren Thomas, with the squad guided for a second straight week by assistant coach Ken Bosense.
Key Moments
5’ - GOAL FOR THUNDER – Rosanna Berry delivers the cross from the right wing allowing Harriet Killen to poke home from close range
35’ – GOAL FOR THUNDER – Melanie Lloyd does it all herself after splitting the Power defence before rounding goalkeeper Tallulah Vearing to set-up a simple finish
47’ – GOAL FOR THUNDER – Jordan Franke’s free-kick is directed at goal and is initially caught by Tallulah Vearing but the Power goalkeeper carries the ball over the line after being jostled by heavy traffic
52’ – GOAL FOR POWER – A sharp turn at the edge of the penalty area allows Michelle Le Roux to guide her finish over Thunder goalkeeper Elizabeth Hollitt
71’ – GOAL FOR THUNDER – Abbey Lloyd delivers a stunning solo effort after skirting three Power defenders before making no mistake with the finish
80’ – GOAL FOR THUNDER – Sophie Fuller is given too much space at the edge of the 18-yard box and places a pin-point finish into the top right corner of the goal
What They Said
“I think today was a great opportunity for the girls to showcase some of the things we’ve been working on at training. We’ve still got a long way to go, but it was good to see improvement in our game.” – Ken Bosense, SWQ Thunder FC Women caretaker coach
“I’m disappointed with today’s performance, given that last week we were so good. Probably the biggest thing is that being such a young team, consistency will be a bit of an issue for us. We’ll go away and learn a lot out of that, and hopefully we come out better next week.” – Michael Cook, Peninsula Power FC Women coach
