Several former VFL players selected in the 2015 AFL and Rookie Drafts played in week 2 of the NAB Challenge on the weekend, including a trio of Essendon draftees.
Those players were Mitch Brown (pick no.54, AFL Draft - pictured), Michael Hartley (pick no.68, AFL Draft) and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (pick no.22, Rookie Draft), who all played important roles in the Bombers’ 60-point victory over Carlton at Ikon Park on Sunday.
Versatile ex-Sandringham tall Brown had 19 disposals at 84 per cent efficiency, eight marks and three rebound-50s in 83 per cent game time spent mostly in defence. Former Coburg key defender Hartley had 14 disposals at 86 per cent efficiency and took five marks opposed mostly to big Blues forward Levi Casboult, while ex-Essendon VFL small defender McDonald-Tipungwuti found the ball 10 times in 67 per cent game time.
In the same match, Andrew Gallucci (pick no.19, Rookie Draft) played significantly more minutes for Carlton than he did last week in the club’s first pre-season hitout. The dynamic former Williamstown small forward had 11 disposals, seven contested possessions, four tackles and a goal in 79 per cent game time.
Sam Collins (pick no.55, AFL Draft) also made his second appearance of the pre-season for Fremantle in the club’s two-point win against Adelaide in Mount Barker, Western Australia on Sunday. Like last week, the ex-Box Hill Hawks key defender played limited game time in the Dockers’ back six, recording seven disposals at 100 per cent efficiency, three marks and three one-percenters.
