Brisbane Strikers skipper Michael Angus says his side his confident of opening their PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues campaign with a win over Brisbane Roar Youth.
Strikers were the form team of the pre-season, demonstrating a penchant for big scores as they reached the final of the BLK Silver Boot tournament.
Angus explained that the team - including high profile recruits Jake McLean, Alistair Davis and Rhys Meredith - are itching to get onto the pitch for their first competitive match of the year.
“We’re very excited. It’s been a pretty lengthy sort of pre-season so we’re really looking forward to getting the first game kicked off,” Angus said.
“It will just be good to get the ball rolling now and get down to the business with points up for grabs”.
Strikers have never lost to Brisbane Roar Youth in PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues in four previous meetings, however Angus was quick to point out the team will not be taking their opponent lightly.
Young Roar, who are coached by former Hyundai A-League star Josh McCloughan, come off the back of the Foxtel National Youth League season where they finished second in a highly competitive Conference A.
“We know what they are going to be like. Josh is the coach and I’ve worked with Josh before quite closely and it’s no surprise his team is playing with a very high intensity and well structured,” Angus said.
“They’ve had a good hit-out with the NYL so all we can expect is a very good technical side with good players”.
Angus also suggested Strikers' finely tuned balance between attacking edge and defensive steel could prove decisive at Perry Park - a venue Young Roar and Strikers will share through the season.
“We’ve shown in pre-season plenty of goals and also kept a pretty good defensive record so I think the boys can be confident,”, Angus said.
“But we are grounded and know that Roar are going to be much the same – very mobile, young and energetic - so I’m sure it’s going to be an exciting game,” he concluded.
