In 2014 the team won the Sydney AFL Women’s Division 2 – undefeated.
It got promoted to the top division last year when as team spokeswoman Mel Ciraolo aid: “We did well with 14 players who had never played.”
Premier Division
In 2015 there were seven teams in Division 1 and 10 in Division 2 – but this year a women’s premier division is being established in the Sydney AFL.
In addition, Mel said, academies with the Sydney Swans and Greater Western Giants GWS Giants will help prepare for a national competition to start in 2017.
The club was set up in 2007 and now Southern Power has a full player pathway for females, from when they finish Auskick to senior football.
Joining from other sports
Mel said most of the girls are joining from other sports like soccer, basketball and netball .
“There are, however, experienced players, that have representative caps and training with the Sydney Swans Academy,” she said.
