COACHES CORNER – NORWOOD
By ZAC MILBANK | Twitter @zacmilbank
Norwood coach Ben Warren is excited by the young talent beginning to filter through to senior ranks after the Redlegs won last year’s Under-18 Macca’s Cup.
As the IGA League team slipped to fifth last year, Warren flagged there could be an influx of new faces under his tutelage in season 2016.
Speaking on SANFL Radio, Warren revealed 16-year-old pair Lachlan Pascoe and Isaac Hewson had captured his attention, particularly with their performances in Friday night’s trial match against West Adelaide at City Mazda Stadium.
Midfielders Matthew Nunn, Darcy Pisani and Adam Zeni will also put pressure on for spots at the selection table as the Redlegs look to inject more leg speed into their line-up this year.
The forward structure at Norwood is also set to take on a vastly different look, with key beacons Michael Newton and Liam Davis departing the club.
Former North Adelaide pair Lewis Johnston and Luke Mitchell are leading contenders, while former GWS Academy player Lyndon Hupfeld could also be considered inside 50m.
Warren confirmed that five players – Alex Georgiou, Jace Bode, Ben Jefferies, Matthew Panos and Tim Webber – would make up the 2016 leadership group, with the captain to be confirmed later this month.
From Friday night’s trial against the Bloods, promising Eyre Peninsula youngster Alex Vilis suffered a corked thigh while goalsneak Josh Donohue took no further part in the game after landing awkwardly on his heel inside the opening two minutes.
