Redlands Edge Pride On Penalties

BLK Silverboot

Words: Michael Flynn

Two crucial saves from Brendan White helped Redlands United prevail on penalties following a 0-0 draw with Western Pride in the BLK Silver Boot on Wednesday night.

The two sides wrestled for dominance throughout but were unable to deliver a winning blow until Greg Warden struck the decisive spot-kick to capitalise on White's earlier efforts.

Clear-cut chances proved elusive through much of the contest as both defences held sway.

Shoheel Khan spurned perhaps the best chance of the opening stanza when he shot wide of the target, while Pride’s Lincoln Rule was unable to beat White with a near post chance.

A change of shape for Redlands at the break delivered more edge, however substitute Nico Bechar proved unable to best Pride goalkeeper Duncan Short one-on-one midway through the half.

Pride came close late in the contest when Geoff McIntyre pounced on a loose ball from a corner, but Redlands' defence was alert to the danger and cleared the attempt of the line.

In the deciding shoot-out Rule and Pride traillist Alistair Wallis, as well as Redland’s Graham Fyfe, all saw their attempts saved, allowing Warden to settle the result with the final penalty kick.

The result marks the first win of the pre-season for the Red Devils. They return in the BLK Silver Boot next Wednesday against Brisbane Premier League outfit Rochedale Rovers.

Pride will also face-off against Brisbane Premier League opposition on the same night when they line-up against Holland Park Hawks.
