Brisbane Strikers coach Kevin A’herne-Evans says the upcoming BLK Silver Boot pre-season tournament will be perfect preparation for the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland season ahead.
Strikers are one of seven PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland clubs competing in the annual pre-season tournament hosted by Brisbane Premier League powerhouse Lions FC.
On Saturday they were drawn in Group A of the tournament alongside PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland rivals Olympic FC, and Brisbane Premier League outfits Mitchelton FC and Logan Lightning.
A’herne-Evans said each of the group stage matches will provide a stern test for his side as they look to improve on their second place finish in the league in 2015.
“There’s always that rivalry between Strikers and Olympic – they are two strong clubs in the NPL – so we are really looking forward to that one,” A’herne-Evans explained.
He added, “Mitchelton are big spenders in the BPL and have a massive budget, and have enticed some really handy players over there.”
Despite the importance of establishing combinations and style in pre-season, A’herne-Evans cautioned about reading too much into pre-season results.
“We didn’t set the world alight last year in pre-season, to be honest,” he recalled.
“And with a lot of players coming into our squad from our junior base and players coming in from other clubs as well, everything takes time.”
“But in saying that, with any team that plays for Brisbane Strikers there is an expectation to dominate the game when we have the ball – that’s a given, as a rule, within the playing group,” he concluded.
