The full redevelopment plan for Chirnside Park (Avalon Airport Oval) will become a reality for the Werribee Football Club with the announcement last week of a $3.25 million commitment from the Federal Government towards the project.
The Federal funding will add to support from the Wyndham Council, State government, AFL, AFL Victoria and North Melbourne to complete the development of the sporting hub that will accommodate all genders and abilities.
The redevelopment will include a new player and umpire change room to accommodate males and females, a new accessible social room, a gymnasium for players, a canteen, more cover and seating for spectators, multi-purpose social meeting and community spaces, office accommodation, landscaping and car parking.
Werribee FC President Martin Carter welcomed the announcement last week by Victorian Senator Michael Ronaldson that the Federal Government had granted funding towards the project.
“This latest announcement is the icing on the cake and means the entire vision of the club can be fulfilled,” Carter said.
“The late John Nicol - our President for the last 10 years - and our CEO Mark Penaluna deserve credit for leading the way to make this happen.
“The support the club has received from Wyndham Council, our local representatives - both Federal and State - has been integral, along with the AFL, AFL Victoria and the North Melbourne Football Club.
“It was - to use a football cliché - a real team effort. The benefits to the greater Wyndham community will be enormous.”
AFL Victoria has been working in partnership with the Werribee FC and Wyndham Council for the past four years on this project and is delighted with this announcement.
“The Werribee Football Club operates in what is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia,” AFL Victoria’s Chief Operating Officer Ricky Bell said.
“The Club is the ‘centre of excellence’ for Australian Football in the region, providing local footballers with an opportunity to participate at State League level, gaining a higher level of football education, coaching and conditioning.
“The Werribee Football Club also delivers other services in the region including, Auskick coordination and multi-cultural programs from the venue.”
“Having a high level facility that is now possible thanks to this funding will allow a variety of programs to be delivered from the venue including a Regional Diversity Academy, Youth Girl’s Academy and better provide for the Western Region Football League finals and TAC Cup matches.”
