GCC Women Lose Pre-Season Opener
Words: Michael Flynn
Gold Coast City Women conceded twice in the second-half to succumb 2-0 to Logan Lightning Women at Cornubia Park in their first pre-season fixture under new coach David Thompson.
Lightning’s Katie Day opened accounts from close range shortly after the hour before Tiarne Petterwood sealed the win in the final minutes by applying the finishing touch to a sharp build-up from the hosts.
Both sides created their share of chances, with City coming closest midway through the first half when Stephanie Foreman struck the post with an angled attempt.
Thompson said he took plenty of positives in the match including promising performances from attacker Georgia Elliston, midfielder Jade Horcicka and defender Claire Farrington.
“It was a very competitive game until the last 20 minutes where we became a bit leg-tired and then they took control,” Thompson concluded.
City are yet to announce any signings for the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland 2016 Women’s squad.
