Strikers To Play Fundraiser Friendly
Words: Staff Writers
Brisbane Strikers will participate in a fund-raising pre-season friendly match against Sunshine Coast community club Caloundra FC next weekend.
The match will be the first hit-out for Strikers after commencing pre-season training last week and will raise funds to assist popular Caloundra FC club member Myk Prescott, who is battling leukemia.
Caloundra FC compete in the Sunshine Coast Premier League and boast ex-Strikers and Socceroos legend Frank Farina as their club patron.
Caloundra FC President Nick Basile explained his club was delighted to secure Strikers as a high-profile opponent in their fundraising endeavor.
“We wanted to get a good game against well-known opposition and there is a link between the two clubs in that Frank Farina has fond memories of his time with the Strikers,” Basile said.
Strikers coach Kevin A’herne-Evans said in addition to being a worthy cause, the match will offer a chance to run the rule over a host of prospective players.
“It’s imperative that in the football community we are prepared to help each other out in times like this and it’s a good opportunity for us to go up to the Sunshine Coast and represent the club in a really good cause,” he explained.
“From a football perspective it’s very early for us. But what we have got is a very new squad, basically, and it’s an opportunity to see a couple of players in an ’11-v-11’ scenario who are looking to get in the senior squad for next year,” A’herne-Evans concluded.
Strikers Under 18’s side will also play in a curtain-raiser to the main event.
