The Campbelltown Blues Australian Football Club have appointed Robert Woolnough as coach of their under-19’s team for the 2016 AFL Sydney competition.
Woolnough has had a successful spell as a coach as he led the Campbelltown Swans Junior Australian Football Club under-14’s to a premiership title and the under-17’s to the finals this season.
He was also chosen to coach the Greater Western Sydney Giants under-15’s side as well as assist in the 2015/2016 AFL Community Development program — a joint venture between the South West Sydney Academy of Sport (SWSAS) and the Blues.
With pre-season well under way, Woolnough is hard at work to achieve his goal of building a consistent and competitive team that will reach the finals.
‘‘In 2016, I’m really excited with the new challenges of coaching senior football,’’ he said.
‘‘[I look forward to] bringing together a new group of young men and turning them into a strong and competitive unit.’’
Blues president Keiran Buckley praised Woolnough as someone with a ‘‘great desire’’ to grow Australian football in the Macarthur region.
‘‘Rob has a true passion for the game and also has a great link from the local junior competition,’’ he said.
Woolnough said he was a passionate coach who focused on developing all aspects of a player’s game to get the best out of them on the oval.
‘‘The best way to achieve that is by working with them and developing their knowledge of the game and their skills,’’ he said.
Woolnough encouraged people interested in playing — whether or not they have Australian football experience — to come down to Monarch Oval, Macquarie Fields and have a run or chat.
The Blues under-19’s train each Thursday at 6.30pm until December 17 and then again each Tuesday and Thursday from January 28.
