Perfect Start for Panthers Women

Jenine Browne

South Adelaide are one of only two undefeated teams in the Central ABL women's competition, after defeating Norwood 78-52 at the Panther Den.

South set up the win with a 25 point first quarter, shooting at 63% to Norwood's 21%. Norwood is fielding a young group this season and struggled to get open shots against the more experienced Panthers. Kerrin Truslove, in her first game for South since transferring from West, hit 6 points in 30 seconds as the lead blew out to 17 by half way though the second quarter. Damian Weeks attempted to change the pace of the game by defending up the floor and a Norwood layup on transition prompted an immediate time out from Glenn Shaw. Nicole Johnson showed some fire with a hard foul after a turnover, but South steadied with consecutive baseline jump shots from Jenine Browne and Jenni Carberry. The Panthers maintained a 21 point advantage at half time, with 14 points and 7 rebounds from Browne a contributing factor.

South extended their lead again in the third, although Norwood put up a fight. Kim Olsen made a strong drive to the basket and converted the two free throws, Nicole Romeo and Kate Gladstone forced a turnover via a double team, and Emily Fryters scored off an offensive rebound. Even with Gladstone drawing a charge and hitting a three in consecutive plays, Norwood were unable to capitalise, and despite keeping South to 13 for the quarter, could only manage 11 themselves.

Jo Robbertson hit a 3 to start the fourth and after a high post feed from Abby Williams to Kerrin Truslove resulted in a Vikki Kelson backcut layup, the game was all but over. Romeo provided a highlight late in the game with a 1 handed circus layup to finish a fast break.

Jenine Browne top scored for the home side with 19 points and Kerrin Truslove had 15 points and 13 rebounds. For Norwood, Jacqui O'Malley top scored with 11 points, 9 of which came before half time, and Kim Olsen had 10.
