GVFL MEDIA personality, John ‘JR’ Ryan, is at it again! He’s just released his final top GVFL 50 players for the 2015 season, just in time for the Grand Final edition of the GV Weekender. Here’s the wash-up !
- 19 players out – a 38% turnaround – more than a third of the side discarded at the selection table
- Only 4 of the 8 playing coaches – Morgan, Looby, Gilliland & Daniels – earn a guernsey
- 2015 Morrison Medallist, Ash Watson, comes in at No 2, playing second fiddle to last year’s Morrison Medallist, Will Martiniello
- Luke Morgan, who was completely overlooked in the early year Top 50, makes his debut at No 17
- Surprise omissions are Daniel Lewis (Mooroopna), Justin Sherman (Kyabram), Billy Burstin (Kyabram), Tim Bongetti (Seymour), Daniel Willis (Shepparton), Kane Boyer (Mooroopna), Adam Boshevski (Mansfield), and John Ikupu (Euroa).
- Spectacular inclusions straight into the top 20, mind you, are BJ Squires (Shepp Swans) to No 10, Paul Scanlon (Seymour) to No 12, Brook Martyn (Benalla) to No 14, Luke Morgan (Benalla) to No 17, George Burbury (Mansfield) to No 20, and Tyson Sidebottom (Shepparton Swans) to No 25.
- The two sides playing in the Grand Final today account for 17 players – Benalla (9) and Kyabram (8) – which might be a fair indication of why they’re playing off for the flag.
- The top 6 teams for the 2015 Finals accounted for 40 players while the bottom 6 managed 10.
- All clubs are represented although four of the bottom six clubs could manage only one representative which tells you something about depth – those clubs are Mooroopna (Shane McDonald), Mansfield (George Burbury), Echuca (Simon Buckley), and Tatura (Jamason Daniels).
- Ryan said his selections were based on form over the whole season. "I take into account the amount of appearances in the best, goals kicked and personal observations."
- When comparing the Top 10s of the Morrison Medal Count and JR’s List, six of the names are shared but four are not – Paul Scanlon came third in the Morrison compared to No 12 in JR’s List, Samuel Smith (Kyabram) was Morrison (7), JR (35), George Burbury (Mansfield) was Morrison (9), JR (20), and the real ‘smokey’ for JR was Matt Dibella (Shepparton United) who came in 10th in the Morrison while JR just squeezed him in as No 49 in his Top 50.
