NEWS: Unified Boys’ U11 Mini Roos league to take off in 2016
BOYS’ Junior football development is set to receive a major boost in next year’s GRFC competition, with a unified Under 11 MiniRoos division set to be staged regionwide on a home and away basis.
The new league style format will cater for boys born in 2005 or later who are considered more experienced and proficient at the sport, compared to their contemporaries.
It is envisaged that each club will be limited to just one team each in the new unified competition, which will remain a half-ground format with no competition points on offer.
The only difference from the normal Hub style format is that the games will be scheduled on a home and away basis.
Other players not taking part in the new league will still be catered for, with clubs set to field their remaining teams in their existing Hubs which fosters the traditional carnival-style set up each week at a different venue.
The past year has seen a record breaking increase in registration numbers of 16.07% in the Geelong region. This incredible growth at Mini Roos level has resulted in the two Geelong based Hubs bursting at the seams, says the co-ordinator of the Southern Hub, Paul Gilmore.
“A staggering total of 1,293 kids played the sport this year in Geelong, spread over the Northern and Southern Hubs,” explained Gilmore.
“It is expected that the introduction of the new U11’s league will go a long way to alleviating the pressure and fixturing congestion on the respective Hubs,” he added.
