Winter Arrives Early For Gators

PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland Women’s Select representative Katie Winter has committed to The Gap FC Women for the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland 2016 season.
Winter joins the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland Women’s Premiers-Champions after spending the 2015 campaign with Gators’ rivals UQFC Women as part of a University of Queensland Sports Scholarship.
The 18-year-old scored the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland Women’s Select’s opening goal against Brisbane Roar W-League on Sunday at Goodwin Park after switching from midfield to a more attacking role.
She also scored seven goals through the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland 2015 Women's campaign in 21 appearances for UQFC.
Winter said she was delighted to return to her former junior club for next season.
“I have a lot of affection for The Gap because I have been there since I was 13 and have done a lot of my development there. I feel I want to be a senior there as well,” Winter explained.
Gators coach Rob Askew said Winter’s versatility was a key reason he sought to secure her services for next season.
“Katie will play a number of roles for us. Like most good footballers she can do a great job wherever you play her,” Askew explained.
He added, “I like her in the more attacking roles because in the past she has always scored freely for us.”
Askew also sees Winter as an important part of Gator’s future success and suggested she had the potential to be a club captain in coming seasons.
“I coached Katie as a 13 year old when she was part of our under 14 JPL side. She was our captain and even at that age was one of the best captains I have worked with.”
“I have always felt she is a future first team captain and I am delighted to have her back here.”
Winter added that she remains determined to continue to improve with her club and hopefully progress to the Westfield W-League in coming seasons.
“I still have aspirations to play W-League. I felt when I did not take these opportunities when I was younger I thought I may have missed the boat. Now I think things have changed and they are looking at girls around my age so there is chance,” she concluded.
