The Blacktown Magic have won their second first grade premiership in three years after defeating Camden by 8 points last Saturday at Blacktown ISP.
In a low scoring, physical game the Magic were able to outlast a spirited Camden outfit to run out winners 7.8 to 5.12.
The game was always going to be physical and it didn’t disappoint if some hard tackles and strong hip and shoulders being applied in the first quarter. It was minor premiers Camden who got out of the blocks the best with two goals to centre half forward Matthew Withers and one to leading Division Two goalkicker Matt Lecek. Blacktown kicked two of their own to star full forward Ethan Barclay slotting both of them,
The Magic started to get on top in quarter two, linking well from defence to attack and keeping the ball locked in their forward half of the ground. Barclay kicked his third while co-coach Ash Moeller also nailed a goal in the quarter to open up a 10 point lead at half time.
The Cats kicked the first goal of the quarter before Barclay responded with his fourth for the match to give the Magic a nine point lead. Camden through everything at the Magic during the third with Mark Maher leading the way, continuously banging the ball forward. The three quarter time siren sounded with the Magic holding an eight point lead.
It was Maher who kicked the first goal of the final quarter to get the Cats back within two points but they couldn’t grab the lead despite all their efforts. Leighton Corr goaled later in the quarter to give the Magic an eight point buffer as the full time siren sounded not long after to announce Blacktown as premiers.
Kent Weir was superb in the middle of the ground and was awarded the best on ground medal. Barclay was a threat up forward all day to finish with four while co-coach Leighton Corr also had a good game. For the Cats, Matthew Withers provided a target up forward all day finishing with two goals with Maher and Josh Van Luenan also gathering plenty of touches throughout the game.
