The Newtown Breakaways have captured the Women’s Division One premiership with a 14 point victory over Sydney University at Blacktown on Saturday.
The Breakaways were physical throughout the whole game and this led to their victory over the Bombers 6.4 to 3.8.
The Bombers were looking for their third premiership in a row while the Breakaways hadn’t tasted premiership success in five years. The Breakaways came out with a mindset to play physical football and they did, laying strong tackles and putting their head over the ball. Newtown’s Codie Briggs was lively up forward early and provided the first goal of the game. Laura Holdsworth also added a goal in the 1st quarter as Newtown went to the break up by 14 points. After the quarter time huddle it was a tight encounter with neither side able to kick a goal in the first 10 minutes. It was Briggs again though who would be the person to kick the first of the quarter and give Newtown a 21 point lead. Both the Breakaways and the Bombers would kick a goal later in the quarter as Newtown held a 17 point lead into half time.
The Bombers needed to lift in the third and they pushed hard for a goal but inaccurate kicking cost them as Newtown went down the other end of the field and slotted home their fourth. Just like the third, both sides would kick a goal later in the quarter with Newtown leading by 21 points as we entered the final quarter.
The Bombers needed and early goal to have hope of getting within striking distance and they got that from Libby Sadler. However, the Bombers could not hit the scoreboard again as the Breakaways celebrated the premiership.
Briggs was the standout for the Breakaways and was rightfully judged best on ground. Rosemary Morrison and Cassandra Lees were also outstanding for the Breakaways. Youngster Nicola Barr was very impressive for the Bombers while Megan Andreson and last years best on ground winner, Rachael Stack also battled hard all day.
