The Wollondilly Knights have claimed the Division Four premiership with a thrilling 6 point victory over Macquarie University at Blacktown today.
The Knights trailed all day but a three goal to zero final quarter pushed them over the line to run out 6.6 to 5.6 winners.
Macquarie University started off well keeping the ball locked in their forward half which resulted in two goals to Timothy Cameron. They held the Knights scoreless in the opening term to go into the first break with a 14 point lead. The Knights came out with more attack in the second but failed to convert their dominance on the scoreboard, kicking 1.5 and still trailing the Warriors by 4 points as both teams enter the sheds at the main break.
It was a tight tussle in the third quarter as the Warriors kicked the first three goals of the quarter before Wollondilly kicked the final two goals of the quarter to take a 10 point lead into the final break. Wollondilly had all the running in the last with a goal to Shaun Paget brining them within a point and then another goal to David Wolfe handing the Knights the lead for the first time. Russell Andrews sealed the victory with the final goal of the game handing the Knights the premiership.
Midfielder Rhys Hamilton was superb all day and was awarded best on ground with backmen Shaun Paget and Daniel Hockey providing good run all day. For the Warriors, Ryan Ludowyke, Gavin Nixon and James Coburn battled hard to push their side over the line.
