NEWS: Brian Conn aims to continue his 500th game celebration into Sunday’s Grand Fi

RANGERS’ captain Brian Conn is hoping his 500th game celebrations will continue well after Sunday’s Grand Final, assuming his team can secure the League/Grand Final double with a win against Surfside Waves at Stead Park and thus erase the pain of losing last year’s season decider against the Deakin Ducks.

“We are all looking forward to Sunday’s clash with Surfside. We won the league this year and we made the final last year, but we lost on the day by one goal to Deakin,” the popular Conny told ffvgeelong.com.au this week, at a special photo-shoot to promote Sunday’s big clash.

“This year we are aiming for the double,” added the experienced defender, who last week achieved a significant milestone in the semi-final win over Drysdale SC – he donned the famous Dark Blue strip of the famous Bell Post Hill club for the 500th time!

“The standard of play in Divvy 1 is really good. It was very close throughout the season. On the final day, for example, any one of four teams could have taken out the title of League Champions, so it goes to show just how even the teams were.

“I would like to see more teams playing in the top division, this year there were only seven but I believe there should be at least ten teams in the competition. Hopefully that will be the case next year,” said Conn.

With a possible Over 35s Masters’ league being mooted for next year, Conn was unsure if the current Rangers team would be breaking up to enter a team in the fledgling veterans’ division.

“I’m not too sure about what will happen next year,” said Conn, “we just won the top division so I’m not exactly sure why we would want to drop down into a lower division.

“But who knows? There might be a few of the boys who might be keen to play in the Over 35s comp. For the time being we are firmly focussed on Sunday’s game against the Waves,” concluded Brian Conn.

The GRFC Men’s Division One Grand Final between Surfside Waves and Geelong Rangers will be held on Sunday at Stead Park, kicking off at 3:10pm.
