Congratulations to Buln Buln ruckman Matt Gray who was awarded the Alf Walton Medal for the 2015 EDFL Senior Best & Fairest tonight. It was the second time Gray has had the Walton medal draped around his neck having also won it in 2005. After winning the EDFL medal in 2005 he moved to Warragul where he spent nine seasons and was a regular Gippsland Football League representative. The athletic and hardworking tall now 30 year of age and a premiership player at Buln Buln last year has also represented the VCFL in both 2014 & 2015 and was a star in the EDFL VCFL Worksafe championship victory over the Maryborough-Castlemaine league this year.
Gray won by three votes from Cora Lynn hard nut midfielder Ricky Clark. Both players were a model of consistency this season. Gray polled votes on 12 occasions while Clark ten times. After round 14 Gray and Clark were tied on 22 votes before Gray received maximum votes in rounds 16 and 17 to take a clear lead. Not to be denied Clark still pressed with three votes in the final round – only to fall three short of the Lyrebird big man.
The vote count for the Gerard Heenan medal for the league reserves was also a thriller and resulted in a three way tie between Koo Wee Rup’s Brett Hobson, Cora Lynn’s Justin Markulija and Buln Buln’s Matthew Nooy, who all sourced 14 votes. It was the first time in the history of the medal that dates back to 1954 that a three way tie has occurred.
Trophies were also awarded to the leading goal kickers. In the seniors Nilma Darnum speedster Jason Wells was the recipient and in the reserves Mitchell Young from Bunyip.
The Lang Lang Golf Club Most Valuable Player award was presented to rising Nyora star Dylan Heylen while Poowong won the Most Disciplined Club Award this season.
The club championship award for 2015 was accepted by Danny Sheehan on behalf on his club Neerim South and the Arthur Pollard trophy for the underage player to poll the most votes at senior level was presented to Dylan Wilson from Lang Lang who gathered 13 votes in the senior count.
