There were some cracking games played out at both Blacktown ISP and Henson Park this weekend including our first draw of the finals series.
Division One
Pennant Hills are the first team through to the Division One grand final after a big 41 point win over Balmain on Saturday. The Demons led at every break and sealed the win with a six goal final quarter. The Tigers will now play in the Preliminary Final this Sunday at Henson Park and will face Sydney University after they defeated the UTS Bats on Sunday. Both sides were inaccurate in front of goals but it was the Students who claimed a spot in the Prelim with a five point win. The Bats took a 20 point lead into the main break but were unable to kick a goal in the second half.
Division Two
Camden stole victory at Blacktown ISP with a come from behind one point victory over Manly Warringah on Sunday. A Matthew Withers goal with 40 seconds left in the game gave the Cats the lead for the first time all game. Manly Warringah had a chance to win the game with a set shot at goal after the siren but the kick went out on the full to send Camden to the grand final.
Division Three
Sydney University set up a rematch of the 2nd Semi Final against UTS with victory over Western Suburbs on Sunday. After a tight opening term, the Students stormed ahead with a six goal to zero second quarter setting up the victory and now will look to avenge the lost to UTS two weeks ago.
Division Four
Wollondilly have reached their second straight grand final after defeating Holroyd Parramatta by 26 points. Poor kicking at goal, 1.7, in the first half cost the Goannas as the Knights took the opportunity to stamp a first half lead. The Goannas worked hard in the second half, outscoring the Knights but the damage had already been done. Wollondilly will now face Macquarie University in the decider.
Under 19s Division One
A seven point win to UNSW/ES has granted them a grand final place after victory over minor premiers Pennant Hills. The lead changed hands several times during the match but it was the Bulldogs who were able to hold on in the last quarter for the win.
Under 19s Division Two
Minor premiers Holroyd Parramatta are through to the grand final after crushing Moorebank by 47 points on Saturday night. Holroyd Parramatta’s Mitchell Sapiatzer was strong up forward kicking five goals in helping the Goannas get the win and set up a meeting with last years premiers Western Suburbs.
Women’s Division One
Newtown have won a thrilling preliminary final by seven points in extra time against UNSW/ES. Trailing by a goal heading into the final quarter, UNSW/ES threw everything at the Breakaways but were unable to hit the front. Newtown pushed hard in the final seconds and nearly claimed the win in normal time with a goal however it was judged to have been kicked after the siren and the game was sent into extra time. The Breakaways kicked the only goal of extra time in the second half as they set up a grand final match with Sydney University.
