2015 Fothergill-Round Medallist Adam Marcon is hoping to follow in the footsteps of best mate and 2013 Medallist Kane Lambert, who’s making a name for himself at AFL level for Richmond this season.
Williamstown midfielder Marcon will be in attendance at the MCG this Sunday afternoon in support of Lambert, when the 23-year-old takes the field for the Tigers in their elimination final against North Melbourne.
The last seven winners of the Fothergill-Round Medal – awarded to the most promising young VFL talent – are all currently on AFL lists: Robin Nahas (2008 winner, playing for North Melbourne), Michael Barlow (2009, Fremantle), Michael Hibberd (2010, Essendon), Ahmed Saad (2011, St Kilda), Dean Towers (2012, Sydney), Lambert and Nic Newman (2014, Sydney).
All were drafted in the year of their Fothergill-Round success except for Lambert, who went from the Northern Blues to Williamstown after the 2013 season before being selected in the 2014 AFL Rookie Draft.
23-year-old Marcon’s journey almost mirrors that of Lambert exactly, with the two having grown up playing sport together before running out alongside each other at the Northern Knights in the TAC Cup, the Northern Bullants/Blues and then the Seagulls.
The only big divergence in their paths came when Lambert graduated to the elite level, where he’s established himself in a finals-bound team by playing 11 consecutive matches since returning from a serious shoulder injury sustained in his debut game in Round 2.
“Me and Kane have been best mates since we were 11 or 12 playing cricket and footy together all the way through,” Marcon said after accepting his award on Monday night.
“(We spent) a lot of hours in the gym, running 400’s and 3km’s, and all the things best mates do.”
A season at Williamstown in which he’s kicked 13 goals while averaging close to 23 disposals and eight tackles per game across 17 matches is likely to have Marcon firmly in the sights of AFL recruiters.
If the recent trend is anything to go by, there’s a good chance this year’s Fothergill-Round Medallist may be sharing a field with his best mate Lambert once again in 2016.
“It is a great inspiration to see him go on to bigger and better things, and I definitely take a lot of satisfaction out of how well he’s going,” Marcon said.
“We still talk a lot about each other’s games and I couldn’t be prouder of how well he’s done.”
