This years Women’s rising star has a good mixture of both Division One and Division Two players and the award could go to anyone.
Ten clubs have had at least one player nominated in 2016 which shows the wide range of increasing talent across the competition. Macquarie University lead the way with four nominations while Auburn, Newtown and UNSW/ES have two each.
There is plenty of competition for the award with Sydney University’s Nicola Barr a slight favourite to win the award after representing NSW/ACT in the rep game against AFL Queensland however Auburn’s Haneen Zreika, who played for NSW in the Youth Girls Nationals and was also selected in the Under 16 All Australian side also having a fantastic first season of senior football and will be right up there in the voting.
The AFL Sydney Women’s coaches will vote on the award, voting 1 to 5 on the nominated rising stars and unable to vote for anyone from their own club.
Previous winners of the award include; Catherine Stanton,pictured left(2014), Stephanie Walker (2013 and Stephanie Kostic (2012)
The winner will be announced on Phelan Medal night. The nominees are:
