Williamstown’s Dylan Conway was named the 2015 A. Todd Medallist for the best and fairest player in the AFL Victoria Development League on Monday night.
The 23-year-old finished two votes clear of second despite only playing eight matches at Development League level this season.
Conway booted 28 goals in that time without going goalless in any game, his tally including a season-high six-goal haul in Williamstown’s 89-point Round 17 win over Werribee for which he earned three votes.
Having played 21 senior VFL matches and 51 Development League matches between 2011 and 2014 after graduating from the Western Jets TAC Cup program, the Williamstown junior started 2015 at senior level in a strong Seagulls side.
However, after just one match in the VFL, Conway played seven of his next eight games in the Development League before his goalkicking exploits saw him play in five of the VFL team’s final seven home-and-away matches.
18 disposals, eight marks and two goals in Williamstown’s Round 19 loss to Werribee showed what Conway could do at the higher level, while he also kicked two goals in the senior team’s Qualifying Final victory over Sandringham last week.
In a demonstration of the depth at the Seagulls and Box Hill Hawks, the top six players in the A. Todd Medal count were from the two clubs that finished in the top three in both the VFL and Development League after the home-and-away season.
Williamstown’s Tyler Curtis was the A. Todd Medal runner-up at two votes behind Conway, while Alex Carr (Williamstown), Chris Jones (Box Hill), Joseph Fisher (Box Hill) and Ryan Exon (Box Hill) finished one vote further back.
Jake Greiser – another Seagull and an early leader in the vote count – finished in equal seventh alongside the Development League’s goalkicking title winner Matthew Kreymborg of Sandringham.
