Finals were played at two venues over the weekend, with Lower Division Finals taking place at Henson Park while the Premier Division games were played out at Blacktown ISP.
DIVISION ONE
Due to a NEAFL game being played during the day, the Division One Qualifying Final was pushed back to a glorious Saturday night timeslot. Pennant Hills got off to a flying start in the first quarter kicking four goals to zero to take an early 22 point lead. UTS didn’t have their kicking boots on as inaccuracy hurt the Bats kicking one goal eight behinds for the half. They found some form in the third quarter snatching the lead at three quarter time however the Demons fought back hard and regained the lead and ran out 12 point winners.
In the Elimination Final, Sydney University lead at every break to defeat Macquarie University on Sunday. The Warriors were never out of the contest but the Students had all the answers as they progressed to the 1st Semi Final next weekend.
DIVISION TWO
Blacktown were the big winners in Division Two after they defeated Camden by 10 points in a hard fought game. In a low scoring affair, Camden let themselves down with some poor execution coming out the back half and will look to improve that before next weeks game.
In the 2nd Division Two match of the weekend, Manly Warringah shook off last weeks defeat to Blacktown, by defeating Penrith by 35 points. The Giants were barely challenged by the Rams as they set up a meeting with Camden next Sunday.
DIVISION THREE
Minor premiers UTS advanced to the grand final after defeating Sydney University by 28 points. The Bats won all four quarters and will play the winner of Sydney University and Western Suburbs after the Magpies defeated Penrith by 25 points. Eight goals to Matthew Eurell and seven goals in the last quarter by the Magpies were the catalyst to the win.
DIVISION FOUR
Macquarie University will be looking for their first ever reserve grade premiership in two weeks time after advancing to the grand final with a 59 point win over Holroyd Parramatta. The Warriors never looked back after a strong first quarter and will enjoy another week off before playing in the grand final. For the Goannas, they will need to repeat the result of a week ago when they play Wollondilly in a rematch of the Qualifying Final after the Knights took care of business against Manly Warringah. After the Giants kicked the first goal of the game, the Knights kicked the next five to take control of the contest and ended up running out 45 point victors.
DIVISION FIVE
UNSW/ES booked themselves a rematch against UTS in the grand final after defeating Pennant Hills at Henson on Sunday. During the half time break, the rain began to fall making conditions difficult for both teams. The Bulldogs managed to adapt to the conditions better of the two sides and ended up running out 21 points winners.
WOMEN’S DIVISION ONE
Sydney University are on track to claim a third consecutive premiership, after they booked yet another grand final appearance by defeating Newtown by 33 points. Some accurate kicking in front of goal by the Bombers steered them to victory. In the 1st Semi Final, UNSW/ES were far too good for Western Wolves restricting them to zero goals for the final three quarters of the game to win by 58 points.
WOMEN’S DIVISION TWO
Penrith set up a date with Gosford in the grand final this weekend with a come from behind two point victory over Auburn. A goal early in the fourth quarter put the Ramettes in front and after numerous shots at goal late in the game for Auburn, the siren sounded to end their season.
UNDER 19s DIVISION ONE
North Shore exacted some revenge from last years grand final defeat by defeating reigning premiers St George by 52 points. A seven goal to nothing second quarter set up the victory for the Bombers who now have the week off before playing in the preliminary final.
UNDER 19s DIVISION TWO
Western Suburbs caused an upset last Saturday night, defeating minor premiers Holroyd Parramatta. After trailing by 15 points at the first break, the Magpies took control of the contest, taking a 10 point lea into the main break and continued on with their performance in the second half to book their second grand final appearance in as many year. The Goannas will now face Moorebank in the Preliminary Final after the Magpies won a thriller out at Blacktown. The lead was changed multiple times during the game in an entertaining 1st Semi Final.
