Wirrulla Bombers came to play, no doubt about it. The Western District Tigers had a head of momentum coming into the match, new comers on the block against the seasoned Wirrulla grand finalists. Perhaps nerves, perhaps awe of the occasion or maybe just a little lack of the Grand Final intensity saw the Tigers goal less at half time when the Bombers set themselves up a match winning forty point lead. From that point the Tigers resurrected themselves with a six goal to four second half, but the damage had been done.
Poise and skill is the best way to describe the Wirrulla effort, they knew when to slow the game and when to charge forward, for so much of the game they appeared to have control, not that the concern or excitement of their supporters showed this. Only the start of the final quarter seeing regular Tigers forays forward but the Bomber defence cool in crisis.
LW Feltus Medal for the best in Grand Final won by Robbie Marshall, excellent display of high marking, a couple of goals but a reliable go to player all day, Julian (Bango) Dickson with strength and energy, Milton Holmes showing dash, a quiet achiever as regularly turns back opposition attacks, young Kahil Evans providing run, he will be quite a player in the next few years, look out for his name, Craig Johnson, strong, either in the air or on the ground. Lynton Pym a target with three goals similarly Shane Pittaway.
Slow starts have caused headaches in the Tiger lair, and this one too big to surmount, unlike last week against the Hawks! Trent Brace around the packs and reading the play named best, Ryan Broad in the ruck, tried hard all day, Jesse Hull, disciplined in key defensive positions and sets up play well, Nathan Hebbermann, missed a couple of goals but found the ball, Jarrad Freeman took some good contested marks and maybe will have become quite a threat with greater opportunity, three goals for him a good return, Matthew Carey some good moments as always, Dylan Beinke around the middle and Neil King others to do well.
Andrew Patterson as coach of the Wirrulla side will be pleased with the back to back result, but also the effort of his charges, a well balanced side on they led the competition for much of the year. Congratulation Wirrulla – Reserves Premiers 2015.
